PERFORMANCE:
When the scooter is not in motion it does become very negatively buoyant, but it does plane out very nicely when in motion. The H-160 can be trimmed easily with the removable weights in fresh or salt water usage. Also, the trigger is a bit stiff and can cause the hand to cramp a little after some lengthy run times. There is a trigger switch that helps you to adjust your speed as well as a trigger lock for cruise controlling. There are three different power settings for this scooter which gives you great flexibility during your dives. When the trigger is released, the motor will continue to run for 1-2 seconds. Just plan accordingly during your dive. With the New Hollis H-160 weighing in at just under 50 /lbs gives this great sea scooter some outstanding run times. I learned how to run this great scooter in not time.
DEPTH / ENDURANCE:
With 45lbs of thrust and a depth rating of 656ft the H-160 is the DPV sea scooter of choice. With removable trim weights you have the perfect trim for salt or fresh water diving. The H-160 is operable with one hand and has a trigger switch that allows divers to vary between power settings of 50%, 75% or 100%. You select the power setting and use the thumb lock to set the underwater cruise control. You can dive the H-160 for 1 hour run time using the max speed. I changed the power settings often and seemed to fine the 75% power setting to be nominal for speed and endurance, at this setting it provided me about 1.5 hours of dive time. Their specifications state for a 50% power setting you will get 2 hours of run time, and 1 hour for max speed. All of these features make the H-160 the DPV of choice for cave, wreck, and recreational diving.
POWER:
The NiMH batteries will need several charge and discharge cycles before they will deliver their full burn time rating. During the first two or three cycles the burn times may be shortened, however after a few cycles the batteries will perform normally as needed. It may take a few more cycles before they have been conditioned enough to reach peak performance. NiMH battery chemistry suffers from a high discharge rate, up to 10% day after the initial charge. High temperatures also affect this, both ambient and internal battery temperature which means keeping out of direct sunlight is critical.
It is not recommended to leave the battery connected to the vehicle for longer than 48 hours if not in use. This could over-discharge, draining and damaging the battery pack. If storing for prolonged periods of time, be sure to charge the battery pack every 2-3 months to ensure a conditioned pack and to avoid damage. At a average power speed of 75% in my dives allowed me to make a 1.5 hours of bottom time in a multiple-level dive. New Hollis states that at a 50% speed power setting the battery burn time is 2 hours
SAFETY FEATURES:
The most noticeable and prominent part when you see a Hollis 160 DPV are the lights in front of it. In fact, these 3×3 high intensity LED bulbs are told to be optional for this product; I haven’t seen a Hollis H-160 without these LEDs on it.
